With an Adriano strike in stoppage time, on 93 minutes, Brazil drew level with Argentina in regulation, bringing on the penalty shootout to determine the champions of Copa America 2004. During the dramatic penalties, Julio Cesar denied D´Alessandro, while Gabriel Heinze missed the target. On the other hand, the Brazilians converted four spot-kicks to clinch the title for Brazil.

As expected, the final match was tense, hard-fought and even, with both sides creating goal-scoring opportunities. In the opening 5 minutes, both teams pleaded for penalties. Brazil requested a foul on striker Adriano in the box, while Argentina wanted the referee to award a hand-ball by Gustavo Nery and a foul on Kily Gonzalez. Striker Carlos Tevez, on the left flank, was the only Argentinean player moving forwadr with authority. Brazil tried to play down the middle of the pitch, with Adriano and Luis Fabiano producing very little. In the dying minutes, the Brazilian threatened from Alex set-plays. On 45 minutes, the midfielder found defender Luisão, who made amends for the earlier penalty he committed with a header to level the scores. The 1-all tie coming as a reward for the Brazilians who matched the Argentineans stride for stide in the first half.

4 minutes after the break, Argentina squandered the easiest of chances through Carlos Tevez. After a Mauro Rosales cross, the Argentinean striker misfired from the 6-yard box to hit the upright. 10 minutes on and Brazil saw midfielder Kleberson leave the pitch due to injury. Parreira swapped him for Diego, and Brazil grew in offensive terms. For Argentina, Bielsa replaced Mauro Rosales for former starting player, Cesar Delgado, with the objective of making his team more powerful on the right flank of their attack. These changes didn´t change the pace of the match. Argentina took the initiative, but were unable to fire at the Brazilian goal. On 71 minutes, Tevez tried his luck from outside the box, but Julio Cesar was equal to the effort. Argentina continued turning the screw, while Brazil closed themselves behind. The Argentinean persistance finally paid off on 87 minutes. Brazilian Renato unable to clear the lines from a cross, allowing Cesar Delgado to drive his shot home to score the second for Argentina. When all seemed defined, the top scorer of Copa America, Adriano, made the most of a loose ball to level the match with a last gasp equalizer, on 93 minutes, to take the match to a penalty shootout. During the penalties, Julio Cesar stopped Andres D´Alessandro¿s first spot-kick, while Adriano put Brazil in front. Defender Gabriel Heinze struck over the crossbar, squandering a second spot-kick for Argentina. Then, Edu and Diego duly converted for Brazil, while Cristian Gonzalez and Sorin scored for Argentina. In the last spot-kick, defender Juan struck his penalty-kick in textbook fashion to secure the Copa America 2004 title for Brazil, their seventh in history.

The Uruguayan team beat Colombia 2-1 to take third in the Copa America Peru 2004. Vicente Sanchez scored the goal that sealed the Uruguayan victory on 80 minutes. After being eliminated in the semifinals of Copa America, Colombia and Uruguay take to the pitch tonight, in Cusco, at 7:45 pm (local time) for the third and fourth place playoff. Besides the honour of ending the competition in third place and the winners medals, there is a 100-thousand dollar prize at stake. Uruguay, defeated by Brazil in a penalty shootout, after a 1-all draw in regulation, will boast a totally revamped squad, depleted of several first-choice players. Colombia, champions in 2001, will field the same team who lost to Argentina 3-nil on Tuesday, in Lima.

Uruguayan coach Jorge Fossati confirmed nine substitutions in regards to the side who clashed with Brazil, last Wednesday, in Lima. The team will also swap the 3-5-2 formation for the 4-4-2. Only defenders Carlos Diogo and Joe Bizera will be on the starting lineup again. Striker Richard Morales, confirmed as a first-choice player today, announced this will be his farewell match with the Celeste jersey.

Since 1987, when the Copa America began to be played in the current format, Uruguay have competed for third place only in 2001, when they lost to Honduras on penalties. Since 1916, the Celeste have placed third seven times: 1921, 1922, 1929, 1937, 1947, 1953 e 1957.

In a nail-biting match with two different halves, Brazil eliminated Uruguay after a penalty shootout to secure their spot in the final of Copa América. Trailing by one goal at halftime, the Brazilian squad drew level right after the break, through top scorer Adriano. During the shootout, keeper Julio Cesar denied Vicente Sanchez to help Brazil win 5-3 and stamp their passport to the final against Argentina on Sunday in the process.

Despite starting the game with a defensive system, Uruguay took the early initiative and created the first goal-scoring opportunities. With 5 minutes on the clock, Jorge Fossati´s team had struck twice at goal, earning four corner-kicks. In the opening minute, Dario Silva found himself face to face with Julio Cesar, who made a huge save. On 5 minutes, Brazil hit back on the counter. Kleberson finding Adriano, who unleashed a powerdriver. Uruguayan keeper parried his shot and Kleberson tried to capitalize on the rebound. Tense on the pitch, the Brazilian players couldn´t repeat the offensive football displayed in the quarterfinals, when they hammered Mexico. On 12 minutes, Uruguay almost broke the deadlock. After a Luisão blunder, who headed the ball poorly, Dario Silva pounced on the loose ball in the 6-year box with an empty net in front of him, but the striker managed to miss the easiest of chances, striking the ball onto the crossbar. Ten minutes later, the Celeste finally found the net. Javier Delgado with the set-play and Marcelo Sosa heading home, helped by keeper Julio Cesar´s howler. In the lead, the Uruguayans were all backs to the wall and started playing on the counter. Brazil took advantage to find their form. But they only managed to threaten Viera´s goal in the last minute, when Edu tried to lob the Uruguayan keeper.

After the break, Brazil returned a totally different outfit. With more determination, they piled pressure on Uruguay and leveled the scores early on. In the first minute, Luis Fabiano´s cross was tapped in by striker Adriano, who scored his sixth in this Copa América. A minute later, the same Adriano almost reversed the score with a shot near the far post. Inspirational Adriano tried his luck again, on 49 minutes, and came close. Brazil began to set the pace in the second half. On 55 minutes, Alex struck from the edge of the box, but was denied by Viera. Realizing that his team had lost momentum, coach Jorge Fossati replaced Carlos Bueno for Forlan. The match became more even, but less technical. Both sides stopped taking chances in attack and only attempted shot from long-range, like Marcelo Sosa, on 65 minutes; Adriano, on 77 minutes, and Javier Delgado, on 79 minutes. Brazil nearly clinched victory in the dying minute, when Julio Batista forced Viera to a difficult save. The match ended 1-all, bringing on the penalty shootout.

Uruguay, a 14-time winner of Copa América, beat Paraguay in the quarterfinals and are determined to maintain the tradition of the mythical Celeste alive. Against the Brazilians, the Uruguayans always recall the historic win in the final match of the 1950 World Cup, held at the Maracaña Stadium, and more recently, the last Copa América title clinched in Montevideo, in 1995. For today¿s crunch match, coach Jorge Fossati wants a more cautious team, who won¿t be as offensive-minded as the side that faced Paraguay. Marcelo Bielsa´s team put on a convincing performance and gave no chance to the current South American champions. Argentina awaits the winner of the Brazil-Uruguay clash to know whom they will do battle with for the title that has eluded them since 1993.

With striker Carlos Tevez replacing injured midfielder Andres D´Alessandro,
Argentina started the match with more determination than Colombia, as they went forward restlessly. Reinaldo Rueda´s side, unbeaten thus far, closed their ranks. In the first half, Colombia played well below par and didn´t strike once at Abbondanzieri´s goal. On the other hand, Argentina passed the ball around nd created fine opportunities. On 11 minutes, after a build-up play by Figueroa, Tevez and Delgado, the Argentineans nearly opened the account with a Delgado strike. On 15 minutes, left-back Sorin attempted from outside the box, only to see his shot fly over Henao´s goal. Soon after, on 24 minutes, Kily Gonzalez pounced on a rebound and struck goal-wards, but defender Andres Gonzalez denied him on the goal-line. After squeezing the Colombians as best they could, Bielsa´s men were finally rewarded on 32 minutes. Carlos Tevez taking a free-kick to score his second goal in the Copa América, his second from a dead-ball. Despite conceding a goal, Colombia stayed in their half of the pitch, concerned only about stopping the Argentineans.

In the second half, Argentina returned in cheerful mood and on 50 minutes, they doubled the lead. In a swift passing move, Luciano Figueroa provided Luis Gonzalez with the opportunity to slot home. Trailing by 2, Colombia finally decided to mount a comeback. Coach Rueda put Viafara and Perea on the field. In the meantime, Marcelo Bielsa decided to close his team, swapping striker Figueroa for defender Quiroga. Despite the substitutions, Argentina continued setting the pace. Carlos Tevez, on the right, and Roasles, who came off the bench in the second half, threatened the Colombian defence insistently. On 80 minutes, after a Rosales´ set-piece, an unmarked Sorin scored a third for Argentina with a diving header, securing victory and qualification to the finals of the Copa América.

Brazil beat Mexico 4-nil, Sunday night in Piura, and qualified to the semifinals of Copa America. Their opponents will be Uruguay, in a fixture scheduled for Wednesday night, in Lima. Carlos Alberto Parreira´s team put a hoodoo to rest, since theu hadn´t defeated Mexico in four previous matches, apart from having lost to Mexicans and Hondurans ¿ both CONCACAF members - in the 2001 Copa America.

Playing without the support of the majority of the fans - the Mexican supporters showed up in greater numbers at the Miguel Grau Stadium - Brazil had the better of the early exchanges, as they squeezed Mexico in their half of the field. On 4 minutes, after a corner-kick, Juan headed the ball onto the crossbar. Mexico tried to make the game a more even affair with a fine individual effort by Pardo, on 9 minutes, but the strike went wide, to the left of keeper Julio Cesar.

But the Brazilians had the better goal-scoring chances. Adriano struck goalwards with power, stinging Sanchez´ hands. In the follow-up, the Brazilian striker pounced on the keeper´s rebound and was brought down for a penalty. Alex did the honors from the spot to break the deadlock. Brazil set the agenda thereafter. Mexico tried to threaten with long-range efforts by Altamirano.

The second told much the same story. On 5 minutes, Brazil added a second with a Juan header, disallowed by referee Oscar Ruiz. The surprise-package in the first phase of Copa America, Paraguay were unable to repeat the form they displayed in the previous matches and were eliminated by Uruguay in the quarterfinals of Copa America. After opening the score, the Paraguayans allowed the Uruguayans to equalize and reverse the scoring, although they were playing with a man down since the 63rd minute. With the 3-1 win, in Tacna, Uruguay wait for the winner of the clash between Brazil and Mexico to know who they will meet in the semifinals of the competition.

In an exciting and even match, Uruguay tried to avoid leaving gaps behind for the Paraguayans, who are represented by their Under-23 team. Nevertheless, Jorge Fossati´s squad lacked attention in defence and allowed Paraguay to counter-attack with peril. On 13 minutes, Nelson Haedo created the first opportunity, striking near the far post of Viera´s goal. Two minutes on and Edgar Barreto took a free-kick and found Gamarra, who scored the opener. Colombia defeated Costa Rica 2-nil this Saturday, in Trujillo, qualifying themselves to the semis of Copa America, confirming their status as firm favorites for their second consecutive title. On Tuesday, yhe Colombians clash with Argentina, who beat Peru 1-nil in Chiclayo, hours earlier.

The match in Lima will bring face to face two teams who met in the build-up for Copa America. On June 27th, in Miami (USA), Colombia were 2-nil winners over Argentina, with strikes by Tressor Moreno and Sergio Herrera. Costa Rica, who had the support of the Peruvian crowd who flocked to the Mansiche stadium, created some fine opportunities - the best coming from a long-range effort by Badilla, on 18 minutes, well stopped by Henao. Colombia came close to scoring on 27 minutes, from a Moreno shot, also from outside the box, that exploded onto the crossbar.

Little by little, the Colombians imposed their authority. On 41 minutes, they reached the rivals´ goal with a move that paid dividens against Peru in the previous match: the cutback from the right finding Abel Aguilar, who fired home giving keeper Gonzalez no chance. Six minutes later, Moreno converted a spot-kick he himself earned to double the lead. Colombian-born Costa Rican coach, Jorge Luis Pinto, tried to turn things around, swapping three players in the first 15 minutes of the second half. But the entrance of veterans Centeno, Gomez and Saborio proved worthless in light of the rivals¿ superiority.

With a goal scored from a free-kick, Carlos Tevez helped Argentina to a 1-nil win over Peru, eliminating the hosts and securing their spot in the semifinals of the competition. In the match held in Chiclayo, Marcelo Bielsa´s men confirmed their favoritism and gave no chance to Peru, who counted on the support from the local crowd.

In the first half, Argentina took the early initiative and turned the screw on Peru right after kick-off. However, the first goal-scoring opportunity only came on 13 minutes, when midfielder D´Alessandro took a free-kick from the left and almost beat Ibañez. Unable to press forward, Peru took their chances with long-balls to their only striker, Andres Mendoza. The Peruvian player managed to beat the heavy marking by Ayala and Heinze only on 38 minutes with a turning shot that hardly threatened keeper Abbondanzieri. The second half followed the same script, with Marcelo Bielsa´s team going forward and leaving no gaps for Peru. On 49 minutes, D´Alessandro tried his luck from outside the box, but keeper Oscar Ibañez was equal to the effort. On 57 minutes, striker Luciano Fugueroa struck the crossbar from a header. In search of victory, Bielsa swapped D´Alessandro adding another striker, Carlos Tevez, on 57 minutes. Soon after, on the hour, Tevez took a inch-perfect free-kick to put Argentina in the lead. The Boca striker finding the top corner of Ibañez. On 64 minutes, Peru almost equalized, with Solano hitting Abbondanzieri´s woodwork. On 68 minutes, it was Palacios´ turn to almost draw level. Even so, Colombians will not take anything for granted. Midfielders Jairo Patiño and David Ferreira, alongside strikers Tressor Moreno and Sergio Herrera, who didn´t start the match against Peru, have been confirmed by coach Reinaldo Rueda. The manager stated that, despite having brought the team to carry out tests in the Copa América, he insists on trying to win their second title. There is one change in defence: Right-back Hayder Palacio will make his debut in the Copa América replacing Gonzalo Martinez.

Costa Rica refuse to be considered underdogs. Coach Jorge Luis Pinto, who was born in Colombia, made just one change to the side that clashed with the Chileans: Left-back Junior Diaz - a halftime substitute - will start playing this time around. Leading the attack is Herron, who started off facing heavy criticism by the fans and now is the greatest Costa Rican idol after his heroic goal on Wednesday.

After overcoming the pressure imposed by the Chilean fans in Tacna, Costa Rica will count on the support of the Peruvians, at the Mansiche Stadium. When the Colombians drew with Peru, they sent the hosts to Chiclayo for the quarterfinals, preventing the Trujillo faithful from seeing their national team in action for a second time in history. Therefore, they will face the wrath of the Trujillians who will take the Mansiche by storm to cheer for the red jerseys.

The quarterfinals of Copa América kick off today with a spot in the semifinals at stake. This Saturday, Peru and Argetina clash at the Elias Aguirre Stadium, in Chichlayo, 770km north of Lima, at 5 pm local time.

Hosts Peru, runners-up in the Group A behind Colombia, made their debut in the competition with a 2-all draw against Bolivia, after trailing by two. Then, they beat Venezuela 3-1 and earned another 2-all tie in the last round, against Colombia, after trailing by two again.

For today´s match against Argentina, Brazilian-born Peruvian coach Paulo Autuori will field an under-strength side, especially in attack. Against the Venezuelans, Peru lost their key striker, Claudio Pizarro, injured in the head and is out of Copa América. In the game with Colombia, another striker, Jefferson Farfan, received a second yellow card and is banned for the match against Argentina. Forward Flavio Maestri, who scored against Colombia, is injured and won´t be playing today. So, coach Paulo Autuori will field just one striker, Andreas Mendoza.

Argentina, runners-up in their group as well, are confident after the 4-2 win against Uruguay, in the last round of Group B. Marcelo Bielsa´s side kicked off with a 6-1 mauling of Ecuador, only to slip up in the following match when they lost 1-nil to Mexico.

For today´s match against Peru, Bielsa confirmed the presence of midfielder Fabricio Coloccini in Javier Mascherano´s place, since the latter was suspended. Left-back Juan Pablo Sorin recovered from injury and is back on the starting lineup, replacing Clemente Rodriguez. Luis Gonzalez, who sprained his ankle against the Uruguayans, has recovered in time and will start playing. In attack, Figueroa, who claimed a brace against Uruguay, will continue on the team, while Javier Saviola is still injured.

Peru and Argentina have player each other 15 times in Copa América history. Argentina have huge advantage, with 10 wins, 2 draws and only 3 defeats. The Paraguayan national team beat the Uruguayan Celeste for the last time in Copa America matches 57 years ago, when the "albirrojos" inflicted a 5-nil win over the Uruguayans. On the other hand, coach Jorge Fossati´s Uruguay haven´t overcome Paraguay in World Cup Qualfiers, since 1957, and in other 7 official matches. The previous victory came on July 9th 1995, nine years ago. Therefore, the quarterfinal match between Uruguay and Paraguay, to be held this Sunday, the 18th, in the city of Tacna, has all the ingredients of a true thriller.

In the Copa America, both teams have met 23 times, with Uruguay taking 12 wins, Paraguay 6 with 5 draws. Uruguay scored 47 goals to Paraguay´s 31. The largest victory took place in November 1926, when Uruguay hammered Paraguay 6-1. The players visited the ruins of the Incan temple Chan Chan, considered one of the largest clay construction in the world. Chan Chan is located a few kilometers from Trujillo, where the Colombians will play the match.

The ruins enchanted the players, who stayed there for an hour during late afternoon. In the morning, they held a training session at the camp in Colégio Perpétuo Socorro. On Thursday, with the trip of the Peruvian trip to Chiclayo, the Colombian will stay in the lodging used by the hosts.

Costa Rica arrived in Trujillo on Thursday, after a short marathon. They left Tacna hours after the win against Chile and took a 3-hour flight to Lima, before heading to Trujillo. On Friday, Costa Rica will visit the Mansiche Stadium, venue for the battle on Saturday.

COPA 2004 NEWS : ARGENTINA WITH THEIR MINDS SET ON QUARTERFINALS

For Argentinean midfielder Andrés D´Alessandro, one of the pillars on the Alvicelestes, the Peruvians will be the toughest opponents because, as hosts, they will come out to draw first blood on Saturday, at the Elias Aguirre, in Chiclayo.

He stated that if Argentina want to reach their objective of winning the Copa América, they will have to beat all rivals, including Peru.

"Both sides will give their all on Saturday, because it´s do or die, especially for Peru, the hosts.

They will be supported by the home crowd. But I believe in us.", he said. Argentinean coach Marcelo Bielsa guaranteed that the quarterfinal match against Peru will be "very entertaining", after they managed to beat Uruguay 4-2 and earn the runners-up spot in Group B of Copa América. Speaking of the performance of his men, Bielsa expressed that the attack is more effective and that individually and as a unit, the team have improved.

COPA 2004 NEWS : PERU BACK IN TRUJILO FOR TRAINING

The training sessions of the Peruvian team were held in the sports arena of the Perpetuo Socorro School, located on the outskirts of the city of Trujillo. Once again, the turnout of fans was unexpected. More than 50 thousand faithful stood behind the main gate trying to get in together with the local press. Some 50 minutes later, the chief of press, Hernan Zamudio allowed the entrance of the supporters after the announcement made by coach Autuori.

During the practice, it was possible to notice the absence of defender Miguel Rebosio, injured in the first 13 minutes of the match against Colombia. Peruvian team doctor Dr. Ramon Aparicio did away with the doubts of all at the camp:"Miguel (Rebosio´s) injury is a simple injury, there is no problem with his menisci, thank God, because at the moment of the lesion, we thought it was worse, and out of precaution he will be rested for 24 hours."

It was also announced that he and other injured players will take part in the quarterfinals. Rebosio will have recovered by Saturday, as will Palacios, Maestri and Jayo. In regards to Juan Jayo, the director of the Peruvian team, Gustavo Cevallos, stated that the midfielder did not receive a second yellow card. He was cautioned just once, against Colombia, and after hearing and reading news informing that he had been suspended, he was reassured by the coaching staff. Tomorrow, the Peruvian national team will work more intensely than today.

With Brazil´s defeat at the hands of Paraguay, the first phase of Copa América ended after 18 matches, 55 goals (an average of 3 goals per game) and 8 teams advanced to the quarterfinals. In Group A, Colombia and Peru. In Group B, Mexico, Argentina and Uruguay. Finally, in Group C, Brazil, Paraguay and Costa Rica.

In the curtain-raiser of the next phase, to be held in the city of Chiclayo, Peru face Argentina, on Saturday, the 17th. On the same day, in Trujillo, Colombia take on Costa Rica. On Sunday, the 18th, Paraguay meet Uruguay in the city of Tacna. And, completing the four quarterfinal fixtures, Brazil lock horns with Mexico, in Piura.

The first phase of the Copa América saw a fine goal average (3 per match) and Argentina was the team with best offensive record, with 10 goals scored in 3 games. The sides who found the net less times were Venezuela and Chile, both with just 2 goals. Colombians and Paraguayans boasted the best defensive records (2 goals conceded), whilst the worst defence belonged to Ecuador, with 10 goals allowed. Up to know, the top scorers of Copa América are Argentinean striker Javier Saviola and Brazilian frontman Adriano. Both scored 3 times each.

With completely modified tams, Brazil and Paraguay provided an entertaining match in Arequipa, mainly in the first half. The Brazilian team, depleted of Mancini, Juan and Alex, rested by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, set the early pace, with two fine goal-scoring opportunities on 7 and 9 minutes, by Luis Fabiano and Maicon. Paraguay, with 4 changes to the squad that tied with Chile, hit back soon after. On 13 minutes, Julio dos Santos obliged Julio Cesar to a difficult save. Then, Carlos Paredes hit the crossbar. Paraguay almost scored on 28 minutes, when Julio Cesar denied Fredy Bareiro from point-blank range. After the corner-kick, Julio Gonzalez rose unmarked to head in the opener. In the second half, the match lost momentum as the teams stopped creating opportunities. The substitutions made by both coaches didn¿t influence the rhythm of the game. Nevertheless, Paraguay capitalized on a lightning counter-attack to seal the deal. On 26 minutes, Fredy Bareiro latched on to an Edgar Barreto before nutmegging keeper Julio Cesar. After the goal, Paraguay saw right-back Emilio Martinez sent off for a violent challenge on Gustavo Nery. Despite the extra man, Brazil didn´t have the strength to comeback and lost the match and top stot in Group C.

The Chilean fans stormed into the city of Tacna, but were unable to help their national team reach the quarterfinals of Copa América. In the very last minute, a goal by Herron sealed a 2-1 victory for Costa Rica against Chile, securing their berth in the quarterfinals of the competition.

Chile, who could end as runners-up in the group had the better of the early play, creating opportunities as in the shot by Mancilla which struck the crossbar. As if in no need of victory, Costa Rica defended themselves with the use of several fouls. After one of the free-kicks earned, the Chilean persistence paid off: after some pinball action in the box, the ball found the net after taking a deflection on skipper Olarra.

In the second half, Costa Rica took more chances and equaled the scores on the hour, also from a dead-ball situation. After the cross from the right, Wright pounced on the loose ball to draw level.The game became a more open affair since the 1-all tie would eliminate both teams while qualifying Bolivia.

After a sequence of squandered opportunities from both sides, Herron broke on the counter before slotting past the on-rushing keeper Varas to reverse the scoring and seal the Costa Rican qualification. Now, they will meet Colombia, on Saturday, in Trujillo.

Chileans and Costs Ricans meet this Wednesday afternoon, in Tacna, (south of Peru) for the first match of the last round in Group C, trying to win to keep alive their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Copa América. The match starts at 5:30 local time, at the Modelo Stadium, remodeled for the tournament also to host one of the quarterfinal matches.

Neither team has won yet: Chile lost to Brazil and drew level with Paraguay, whilst Costa Rica were beaten twice. Nevertheless, both sides can still qualify. Chile can even end up in second place if they win by a big goal difference and Paraguay lose to Brazil in the following match. In this case, they will face Mexico, in Piura. Costa Rica can finish as 2nd Best 3rd at the most and would take on Colombia, in the quarterfinals, in Trujillo.

If the match ends in a 1-all draw, both teams take an early exit, and Bolivia will face Colombia. In case they tie at 2 apiece, the drawing of lots between Bolivia and Chile will define who will advance - since they would have the exact same campaigns.

Chile can almost feel they´re playing at home. The city of Tacna, 1,300km south of Lima, lies on the border with the country. Thousands of Chileans have taken the city by storm since the beginning of the week to support their national side.

Chile take to the pitch with a totally revamped team in relation to the team who drew level with Paraguay. Keeper Varas, who played against Brazil but was sidelined in the previous match, is back. In midfield, Mirosevic and Melendez will be replaced by Rodrigo Millar and Luis Jimenez. In attack, Hector Mansilla takes Patricio Galaz´s place.

Costa Rica will also be different to the side that was hammered by Brazil. Right-back Bennett will be substituted by Castro. In attack, Alvaro Saborio will be replaced by seasoned Ronaldo Gomez.

In an action-packed game, in which the coaches were the standouts, Argentina beat bitter rivals Uruguay 4-2 and ended the first phase of Copa America as runners-up, with 6 points, and face Peru in the quarterfinals. Despite the defeat, Uruguay are still in contention, but depend on the results of the matches between Brazil X Paraguay and Chile X Costa Rica.

The first half of the fiercest derby in the world, with a total of 194 clashes, lived up to tradition. With chances from both sides, violent plays and goals galore, Uruguay went ahead with a quality strike from Fabian Estoyanoff, on 7 minutes. Dissatisfied with the loss to Mexico, Marcelo Bielsa fielded Argentina without striker Saviola. So, Argentina had to count on the offensive moves of right-winger Luis Gonzalez. In one of his plays, he was bundled in the box and Killy Gonzales duly converted the spot-kick. While the Uruguayans were still trying to recover from the blow, Luciano Fugueroa (Saviola´s replacement) pounced on keeper Luis Barbat´s rebound and turned the game around. On 34 minutes, after a crude challenge, Uruguayan defender Joe Bizera received his second booking and was given his marching orders. Despite being a man down, Uruguayan grit came to the fore and Vicente Sanchez leveled the scores to make it 2 apiece after a counter-attack.

After the break, coach Jorge Fossati change his side, strengthening his defensive system by closing his ranks. Uruguay marked well, and keeper Barbat made important saves, as in strikes by Figueroa, on 63 minutes, and Luis Gonzalez, on 77. In order to breach Fossati´s blockade, Marcelo Bielsa fielded Carlos Tevez, Mariano Gonzales and ... Saviola. His replacements paid dividends and on 80 minutes, Ayala beat the Uruguayan defenders to put Argentina back in front. The Celeste, playing in red, succumbed and after a pass by Tevez, Figueroa bagged a brace and sealed Argentina´s 14th win against Uruguay in the history of Copa America.

Mexico played well just in the first half to score twice, and secured the result in the second to beat Ecuador 2-1 and hold top spot, temporarily, in Group B of Copa America, with 7 points. If Uruguay (4 points) do not beat Argentina by more than one goal difference, Mexico will confirm first place in the Group and will take on the challenge by the runners-up in Group C, Brazil or Paraguay.

Both teams started the match with several changes to the lineup that kicked off the previous match of Group B. Mexico spared some first-choice players who had been booked and Ecuadorian coach, Hernan Dario Gomez, swapped players with the objective of trying to achieve at least a victory in a probable farewell match for veteran Alex Aguinaga in the Copa America. The cheerful Mexican fans witnessed a stroll in the park by the Mexican team in the first half. Moving the ball around with ease before an uninterested Ecuadorian defence, Mexico had no trouble to find the net twice. On 23 minutes, Altamirano converted a penalty-kick earned by Bautista. On 42 minutes, the same Bautista stormed into the area unmarked to blast home, finding keeper Espinoza´s top right-hand corner.

In the second half, Ecuador fielded striker Franklin Salas - who played in the second match and scored a goal - and their attack improved. Twenty five thousand supporters packed the Mansiche stadium, in Trujillo, on Thursday night, and put on a huge party, but were unable to take Peru to victory against Colombia. The 2-all draw earned the hosts of Copa America second place in Group A.

Spurred on by the home fans, who turned out in droves at the stadium still in the morning, Peru went forward and squandered two chances with Mendoza. Colombia made the most of the gaps left behind and opened the scoring on 33 minutes, with Congo making the most of a cross from the right.

The party continued, despite the negative result. But hopes were shattered when Abel Aguiar added a second for the Colombians. For three minutes, the Peruvians supporters stopped cheering. Until Solano halved the deficit with a perfectly struck free-kick from the edge of the box to make it 2-1.

On 61 minutes, the fans went into orbit, when Maestri headed in a Mendoza pass to level the match. The Peruvian side carried on fighting, but couldn¿t reverse the scoring. Now, Peru ¿ who played their first match ever in Trujillo ¿ will play the quarterfinals in Chiclayo, while Colombia remain in Trujillo.

Colombian manager Reinaldo Rueda spoke about the game and qualification as leaders of the Group: ¿As we expected, it was a tense match. We felt the pressure in the beginning, but the team managed to focus and score goals. We have a well-mounted side, who work as a unit. Now, we must concentrate on the next match.¿

Peru and Colombia meet in a crunch match in Group A, this Monday, in Trujillo (north of Peru), at 7:45 pm. With 6 points, the Colombians can afford to draw. Peru have to win, but will also secure their spot with a tie. If they lose, the hosts could be overcome by Bolivia, who face Venezuela in the previous match, and will depend on the results of the other groups to make it to the quarterfinals.
Moreover, the leaders of the group enjoy two advantages: they will remain in Trujillo for the quarterfinal match and will take on the second best third-placed team. The runners-up in Group A will travel 200km to Chiclayo and will clash with the runners-up in the very tight Group B.

Although he enjoys a comfortable situation, Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda has shrouded his team in mystery. On Sunday, he held recreational training sessions and refused to reveal his lineup - he might put some of his first-choice players to rest. For instance, keeper Henao, who was booked with a yellow card, might be left out in order to avoid a ban.

If he does play, Henao will defend a 745-minute clean sheet of the Colombian national squad in a Copa America. The last goal he conceded as keeper of the current cup holders was in 1999, when Chilean Ivan Zamorano scored on 65 minutes of the quarterfinal match that ended 3-2 in favor of the Chileans. Calero was the goalie in that occasion. In 2001, Colombia were crowned champions of the Copa America with 6 wins in as many matches, with 11 goals scored and none allowed. Oscar Cordoba was the unbeaten keeper.

Brazilian-born manager for Peru, Paulo Autuori, also decided to conceal his lineup. We won¿t be counting on striker Pizarro, who suffered a brain injury after being elbowed by defender Cichero and is sidelined for the rest of the Copa America. Pizarro didn´t make the trip to Trujillo, since he´s been committed to a hospital in Lima.

His most probable substitute will be Flavio Maestri, who plays for Brazilian Vitoria and started the opening match. This way, Jefferson Farfan will play behind, in midfield. Another option is midfielder Carlos Zegarra - with Farfan playing more offensively, alongside Andrés Mendoza.

This Monday, Venezuela and Bolivia open the last round of Group A in the Copa America in a similar situation: both need to win at all cost to continue in the competition.
Neither of the teams depend on their own results to make it to the quarterfinals, but any negative result will shatter all chances of qualification. A tie in the match in the city of Trujillo (north of Peru), at 5:30 pm local time, practically eliminates both squads.

Venezuela, defeated in both matches, must win to take third place and hope for a draw between Chile and Costa Rica, on Wednesday, in Tacna, for the last round in Group C. Bolivia have one point from the draw against Peru and could end second, if the hosts defeat Colombia in the following match. Coach Richard Paez will modify the side that began both previous matches, in order to comply with a promise made to the Venezuelan people before traveling to Peru: achieve at least the second best third place. Depleted of midfielders Mea Vitali, sent off against Peru, and direct substitute Jorge Rojas, who received his second yellow card, the manager will field Andree Gonzalez. In attack, Massimo Margiotta, a second-half replacement in both matches and scorer of the consolation against Peru, will take Roberth Moráns´ place.

On Sunday, when visiting the pitch, Paez said that Venezuela have been playing well, and despite the poor results, he promised victory: "Venezuela have a good team that have all the conditions to beat Bolivia. And they will!"

On the Bolivian side, the only change made by coach Ramiro Blacut is the entrance of Richard Rojas in Luis Cristaldo´s place, since the skipper injured his right thigh and isn¿t fit to play. Striker Miguel Mercado, whose father passed away last Saturday, was given permission to return to Bolivia, but chose to stay in the country and will be on the starting lineup.

The first half was a tight affair, with both teams trying to defend a lot. Paraguay, who went forward more often, were unable to make the finish. Chile, who rarely attacked, didn¿t strike at Justo Villar´s goal. On 20 minutes, the Chileans had their best chance, with striker Mirosevic unleashing a piledriver from outside the box, but off target. Paraguay only came close on 32 minuts, when Torres supplied a cross and defender Luis Fuentes almost found the net with a header. At the end of the first half, striker Haedo had a chance to score for the Paraguayans, but nodded over the bar from a Paredes´ cross.

In the second half, Chilean manager Juvenal Olmos swapped left-back Rodrigo Perez for Mauricio Aros and put frontman Hector Mancilla in Patricio Galaz´s place. The change paid off as Chile pressed forward with more efficiency. On 49 minutes, Mirosevic struck from distance, forcing Villar to a difficult save. Then, Mancilla broke down the left before firing wide. On 71 minutes, defender Aros delivered a cross from the left, the ball crossed the face of goal before finding striker Sebastian Gonzalez (who squandered a spot-kick against Brazil) to crash home. This goal kicked Paraguay into action. On 78 minutes, left-back Ernesto Cristaldo tried his luck from way out and scored a blockbuster, lobbing keeper Claudio Bravo. This result, which practically secures Paraguay in the second phase, made coach Carlos Jara close his ranks to hold the draw. He replaced striker Fredy Bareiro for defender Emilio Martinez. With the substitution, he managed to block the Chilean attack, who never reached Villar´s goal. Paraguay meet Brazil on the 14th, with the first place in Group C at stake. With one change in relation to the team that beat Chile on the opening day - Kleberson in Dudu Cearense´s place - the Brazilian squad took to the pitch with a more offensive formation, but took some time to find their form. The first goal-scoring opportunity came on 10 minutes, when Luis Fabiano found himself face to face with keeper Ricardo Gonzalez. Costa Rica hit back soon after in the only chance they created in the first half. Striker Bryce powering goal-wards and forcing keeper Julio Cesar to a huge save. Then, Brazil were unable to move forward with peril. However, in the last minute of the first half, Adriano broke the deadlock. After latching on to an Alex long-ball, the striker rounded keeper Gonzalez to make it 1-nil, the score at the break.

In the second half, Brazil returned with more determination and, within 10 minutes, scored twice. On 49 minutes, defender Juan broke from deep before slotting past the keeper. Moments later, Adriano headed in an Alex corner-kick. With the 3-nil advantage, manager Parreira swapped two players - Diego and Vagner Love replacing Kleberson and a shy Luis Fabiano, respectively. Setting the pace, Brazil extended the lead on 67 minutes. Gustavo Nery supplying the cross for Adriano to bag his hat-trick at his second attempt. The Brazilian frontman is the top scorer of the Copa America, alongside Argentinean Javier Saviola. With the huge lead, Brazil took the foot off the peddle and allowed Costa Rica to attack. Chile and Paraguay lock horns today in the second round of Group C of Copa America, in Arequipa, south of Peru. Both teams will meet at the UNSA stadium, at 5:15 pm local time. Chile, who lost 1-nil in the opening match to Brazil, need to win in order to continue dreaming of the quarterfinals. Paraguay, 1-nil victors against Costa Rica, need a narrow victory to stamp their pass to the next phase.

For this match, Chilean coach Juvenal Olmos will make changes to the team, with his sights set on victory over the Paraguayans. The first change takes place in goal, where Claudio Bravo replaces Alex Varas, injured in yesterday's training. Another change will be right-back Ismael Fuentes replacing Moises Villarroel. In midfield and attack, Juvenal Olmos will keep the same players who lost to Brazil. The Chilean manager will ask his men to be extra cautious with Paraguayan midfielder Aureliano Torres, who is the playmaker and demands special attention.

Manager Carlos Alberto Parreira, who stated the the opening match would be the toughest challenge of his squad, will make changes to the team who didn't please the coach. Midfielder Kleberson, recovered from injury, replaces Dudu Cearense, swapped for Diego in the first match. In attack, Ricardo Oliveira takes Adriano's place.

Colombian-born manager for Costa Rica, Jorge Luis Pinto, was pleased with his side's performance in the 1-nil loss to Paraguay. The coach, who made his on the Costa Rican team in the opening match, stated that he will field a defensive side to hold back Brazil while trying to catch them by surprise on the counter. The mysterious coach didn't disclose his lineup for the game against the Brazilians, but hinted that he will put striker Afonso Soliz in Ronald Gomez's place.

Mexico overcome Argentina with a textbook free-kick by Ramon Morales on 8 minutes and raise the temperature in Group B of Copa America. Mexico and Uruguay share top spot with 4 points and with only one more round to go in the first fase, Argentina are third, on 3 points and have to beat rivals Uruguay in the last fixture, on the 13th, to qualify.

Argentineans realized early on that they wouldn´t have another stroll in the park. 8 minutes after kick-off, Ramon Morales found the upper corner with a perfectly taken free-kick and opened the account for Mexico. Although striker Javier Saviola, the star of the match against Ecuador, was well-marked, Argentina created a few goal-scoring chances, but were unable to capitalize. The match carried on with Mexico defending themselves and trying to break on the counter until the interval.

In the second half, Marcelo Bielsa´s side returned with more determination and pinned Mexico in their own half. They created their best chances through Ayala and Sorin, with headers, but keeper Sanchez was equal to the task. In the meantime, Mexico defended well, the standout being defender Rafael Marquez, and all the Argentineans could do was protest against Brazilian referee Marcio Rezende de Freitas as they watched Mexico secure their first win in the competition.

Uruguay beat Ecuador 2-1 and will decide a berth in the second phase of the Copa America with Argentina, on July 13th. The goals scored by the blue Celeste were scored by Diego Forlan and Carlos Bueno. Franklin Salas reduced the gap for Ecuador.

With both sides in need of victory to continue in contention, the first half was tense. So much so that, on 6 minutes, defender Montero ¿ who scored the equalizer against Mexico ¿ was booked for a violent challenge. The match continued seeing some heavy marking and mistakes in midfield, but Uruguay created more opportunities, with Montero heading a ball onto the upright, on 4 minutes, Forlan lashing a strike on 37 minutes, and defender Joe Bizerra deflecting a ball with his head that shaved the crossbar on Ibarra´s goal.

The second half began with the squads determined to achieve victory, and on the very first minute, Ecuadorian Edison Mendez almost startled goalkeeper Barbat. Uruguay hit back immediately, and two minutes later, Dario Silva missed a huge chance after a corner-kick. There was little to choose between both teams. But it was Uruguay who took the lead. Forlan striking from outside the area to make it 1-nil on 61 minutes. Ecuador tried to comeback only after the entrance of striker Franklin Salas, who leveled the scores on 72 minutes. Uruguay didn´t lie down and continued attacking. Fossati´s team were rewarded on 78 minutes, when Carlos Bueno, who went unnoticed until then, made the most of Ibarra´s parry to secure a 2-1 win for Uruguay.

All criticism received by Marcelo Bielsa at the helm of the Argentinean national team have diminished since the 6-1 mauling of Ecuador, last Wednesday. But the manager knows all too well that the positive moment depends on the side achieving more convincing results, therefore, this is what they will be in search of in the match against Mexico, this Saturday, in Chiclayo (north of Peru). The game scheduled for 7:45 pm local time, closes the second round of Group B in Copa America.

¿All criticism arises after each performance by the team. What happens today is forgotten after the following match if we don¿t repeat the good performance.¿, said the manager at the press conference, during which he kept the same poised attitude he shows during the games, a behaviour he abandoned after the goals against the Ecuadorians.

Victory today by the narrowest of margins qualifies Argentina to the quarterfinals of the Copa America. The players also avoid too much optimism. Midfielder Alex Aguinaga, greatest idol in Ecuadorian football, is the main attraction of his team in the match against Uruguay, this Saturday, which opens the second round of Group B of Copa América. The match will be held at the Elias Aguirre Stadium, in Chiclayo, (north of Peru), at 5:30 pm local time.

Ecuador will be counting on their best player to recover from the disastrous performance on their debut, when they suffered a 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Argentina. Aguinaga will have a more offensive role, playing alongside striker Agustin Delagdo, who scored the consolation last Wednesday. Aguinaga¿s entrance is just one of the changes promoted by coach Hernan Dario Gomez, who threatened to quit after the trouncing, but was convinced by the Ecuadorian Football Federation to carry on the work he began four years ago, the highlight being the qualification to the 2002 World Cup finals.

Delgado is another change. He came on in the second half, but now is a first-choice player ¿ the starting attack on the debut featured Vicente Ambrossi and Ebelio Ordoñez. Midfielder Marlon Ayovi replaces Edison Mendez, who also played in the second half against Argentina.

Uruguay will also be in search of a better result than the one on opening day, when they managed to avoid defeat against Mexico with a last-minute header by defender Montero. However, the starting lineup will be the same.

The difference will be on the substitute bench. Striker Richard Morales, who came on in the second half and was sent off after 2 minutes, will serve his ban. Keeper Sebastian Vieira, from Nacional, will be the shotstopper in place of dismissed Fabian Carini¿s, after Sebastian¿s inclusion was authorised by Conmebol.

Meanwhile, regular Luis Barbat tries to recover from the criticism received for the 2 goals conceded against the Mexicans ¿ both from long distance. The 36-year-old veteran keeper said he¿s not shattered and that he was caught by surprise in both shots.

Playing a more poised football than in the opening match of Copa América, hosts Peru beat Venezuela 3-1, in Lima, and have practically secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the competition. Jefferson Farfán, in the first half, and Nolberto Solano and Santiago Acasiete, in the second half, scored the goals for Peru. Massimo Margiotta pulled a goal back for Venezuela.

After a poor start to the Copa América, when they tied 2-all with Bolivia, the Peruvians stopped playing franticly and moved forward with more tranquility. Playing with three strikers (Pizarro, Farfán and Mendoza), Paulo Autuori¿s men squeezed Venezuela and secured a convincing win. In the first half, Peru created two fine opportunities before opening the score. Mendoza and Pizarro almost scored on 26 and 32 minutes, respectively. On 33 minutes, after a defensive blunder, an unmarked Jefferson Farfán scored the opener.

In the second half, Venezuela´s manager, Richard Paéz, tried to reinforce his attack by putting Ruberth Morán in Jorge Rojas¿ place. However, the change weakened the team in midfield. This way, Peru reached Angelucci¿s goal with more ease. On 49 minutes, Palacios squandered an opportunity inside the 6-yard box. On 53 minutes, it was Mendoza¿s turn to miss a chance. On 71 minutes, Venezuela succumbed to Peruvian pressure and conceded a second goal. Left-back Vilches supplying a cross for Solando to double the lead. Soon after, the Venezuelans lost midfielder Mea Vitali, sent off for a foul on Farfán. With the extra man, Peru had little trouble to extend the lead. As in the first match, Colombia scored the winner at the death and secured a victory by the odd goal. With a strike by Edixon Perea on 90 minutes, the current Copa América champions beat Bolivia 1-nil and qualified to the quarterfinals of the Copa América.

The match saw few opportunities and was an even affair. In the first half, both teams created two chances and deserved the stalemate. The first Bolivian opportunity came on 19 minutes, with Limberg Gutiérrez taking a free-kick and coming close to Henao¿s goal. Colombia hit back with a carbon-copy play, with Sergio Herrero striking from a deadball, on 33 minutes. The same minute, the Bolivians lost midfielder Luis Cristaldo to injury. He was replaced by Walter Flores. The midfielder added creativity to Ramiro Blacut´s team, who went forward with authority on 41 minutes, as Roland Arana unleashed a powerdriver from outside the box.

In the second half, Colombia returned with the better of the exchanges and on 49 minutes, David Ferreira almost broke the deadlock with a strike from the edge of the area. Keeper Leonardo Fernández, who played brilliantly in the opening match, was equal to the effort. Soon after, on 12 and 14 minutes, Colombian Tressor Moreno nearly opened the scoring with two powerful strikes. Ramiro Blacut´s frontmen were unable to threaten Henao´s goal. Moreover, Mercado and Botero were caught offside 5 times. At the very end, Colombia finally found the opener. Hosts of Copa América, Peruvians will have to take all their chances in the match against Venezuela, in Lima, this Friday. After a hard-fought 2-all tie in the opening encounter against Bolivia, Peru are back to the Nacional Stadium, for the match scheduled for 7:45 pm, in need of victory to avoid premature elimination.

Coach Paulo Autuori¿s greatest challenge is to keep the emotional balance of his men, shattered by the poor performance in the first game and by a break-up with the local press. Players have avoided interviews after a newspaper published that midfielder Solano and defender Rebosio arrived drunk at the team¿s training camp. Rebosio made insulting gestures to the reporters at the entrance of the camp and nobody wants to make any statements, an act that has shocked the press.

The result of the last encounter between Peru and Venezuela is something to be forgotten: a goal-less draw, at the same Nacional Stadium, for the 2006 World Cup Qualifiers.

Midfielder Palacios, who came on in the second half against Bolivia and scored the equalizer, will start the match replacing Maestri, who plays for Brazilian Vitoria.

Venezuela¿s situation is also uncomfortable. Beaten by Colombia in the curtain-raiser for Copa América, the side wants to prove their recent ascent in South-American football and manage their second win in the history of the competition ¿ the first came in 1967, a 3-nil victory over Bolivia, in their first participation.

Manager Richard Paez, who disliked the first performance of his men against the Colombians, hasn¿t confirmed any changes on his team, but should choose a more compact formation, with the entrance of midfielder Rojas in place of striker Morán.

Coach Reinaldo Rueda¿s team will take to the field in full force. Keeper Henao and defender Gonzales, who were exhausted after the win against Venezuela in their opening match, have already recovered and are fit to play, although Rueda said he will wait until ¿the very last minute¿ to confirm his starting lineup.

Colombians are afraid of having to face true ¿hell¿ in the last fixture in Group A, when they take on Peru, in Trujillo. The hosts might be in desperate need of a win in the last match, and Rueda believes this situation could harm his side immensely. Therefore, the manager is determined to secure qualification in anticipation. He states that he respects the Bolivians, who left a fine impression in the clash against Peru.

Bolivian coach Ramiro Blacut stated that his side need a more winning mentality in order to be one of the eight best teams in the Copa América. After opening a 2-nil lead against Peru, the team succumbed to the pressure of the hosts and allowed them to draw level.

Despite his dissatisfaction with his men, Blacut will field the same first-choice players that played in the opening match. His only doubt is midfielder Limbert Pizarro, injured in the ankle, who trained normally and is confirmed.

When the game seemed to be heading towards a goal-less draw, opportunistic Luis Fabiano headed in the winner that clinched a 1-nil victory for Brazil in their opening match in the Copa América, in Arequipa. This result places Carlos Alberto Parreira´s team in the drivers seat in Group C, alongside Paraguay, who also secured a 1-nil win on their debut.

The Brazilian national team had the better of the early exchanges, squeezing the Chileans, however, they never really gave keeper Alex Varas any trouble. Chile broke on the counter and startled Brazil in their first attacks. On 23 minutes, midfielder Edu brought Rodrigo Valenzuela down in the box. Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez granted the penalty. Sebastian Gonzalez converted the spot-kick, ruled out by the referee for encroachment. As the Chilean striker retook the penalty-kick, he saw the ball fly over the crossbar, squandering the chance to put Chile in the lead. This incident put the Brazilian defenders on alert. The side fell back in their ranks a little more and only created another opportunity on 36 minutes, when Alex struck from outside the box.

After the break, coach Juvenal Olmos replaced Gonzalez, who had missed the spot-kick, for Luis Jimenez. The swap didn´t help the Chilean side turn the pressure on Brazil. Soon after, Parreira put Diego and Ricardo Oliveira on the team, replacing Dudu Cearense and Adriano. The Santos midfielder gave the team a new pace and they almost scored on 63 minutes, through Alex. On 74 minutes, Ricardo Oliveira nearly opened the scoring from distance. Chile only threatened Brazil on 75 minutes, with Mancilla forcing keeper Julio César to a huge save. On 90 minutes, after two debatable plays (which saw Brazilian players pleading for a penalty), Brazil got the deadlock breaker. Alex with the corner-kick and striker Luis Fabiano, who had done very little thus far, heading in the winner. It was the striker´s second goal against Chile in their two last encounters with the Brazilian squad.

The standout of the match, Luis Fabiano, explained the difficulties encountered by the Brazilian squad and how it felt to clinch victory. "The ball wouldn´t reach me. The players were too apart and I was alone up front. We found several obstacles, since the team was mounted recently. I´m glad I scored the goal that will bring confidence to Brazil."

A spot-kick earned by midfielder Julio dos Santos, on 86 minutes, sealed a hard-fought win by Paraguay over Costa Rica in their opening match in Group C of Copa América. The fixture, held in Arequipa, south of Peru, presented a low technical level. The Paraguayans, represented basically by their Pre-Olympic team, created few chances throughout the match. Costa Rica, with debutant coach Jorge Luis Pinto at the helm, showcased an unattractive football.

In the first half, Paraguay tried their luck with long-distance strikes, that flew far from Ricardo Gonzalez¿s goal. Paraguayan striker Nelson Haedo created the best chances for Carlos Jara Saguier¿s side. Costa Rica took a long time to find their form and only threatened Edgar Barreto¿s goal on 22 minutes, when midfielder Steven Bryce¿s effort from the right forced the keeper to make the save at his second attempt. Thereafter, both teams refused to move forward and the stalemate was a fair result for the football skills shown in the first period.

In order to improve his side, Paraguayan manager Carlos Jará, who has coached the top team since replacing Aníbal Ruíz, swapped an unproductive Jorge Britez for Julio dos Santos. The change had little effect. Only in the dying minutes, after a fine individual effort by Fredy Bareiro, Paraguay managed to break the deadlock. After storming into the box, the striker was tripped by defender Mauricio Wright. Referee Oscar Ruiz conceded the penalty-kick, converted by Julio dos Santos. The 1-nil win puts Paraguay at the top of the table in Group C, which also boasts Brazil and Chile.

Manager Carlos Jará is glad with the tactical work done by his team. "Paraguay worked well in defense. At the end, they moved forward and earned a penalty that rewarded our efforts. Victory was an important step, but there´s still a long way to go."

Paraguay open Group C of Copa América taking on the challenge by Costa Rica today, at 5:30 pm (local time) at the UNSA stadium, in Arequipa, south of Peru. The Paraguayans, coached by Carlos Jara Saguier, from the Under-23 squad, boast a totally renewed team in relation to the one taking part in the 2006 World Cup Qualifiers. With the basic formation of the side who earned a berth at the Olympics, Paraguay will search for their first win ever against Costa Rica.

For their opening match, Paraguay have doubts regarding the starting line-up. The first one, according to manager Carlos Jara Saguier, is in goal, where Justo Villar and seasoned Diego Barreto battle for the position. In attack, young Nelson Haeda must pass the fitness test to get the approval from the doctors to play. In case he can¿t play, Fredy Bareiro will take his place.

Manager Jorge Luis Pinto will make his debut at the helm of the Costa Rican team. The Argentinean national team confirmed their status as hot favourites by making short work of Ecuador with a 6-1 demolition. The match was sealed in the second half, when the Argentineans made the most of the superior talent of their players to score 5 goals. The standout of the match was Saviola, who claimed a hat-trick. The other goals were scored by Cristian 'Kily' Gonzalez (penalty), D'Alessandro and Luis Gonzalez. Delgado scored the consolation for Ecuador.

With his job at stake, coach Marcelo Bielsa sent his team forward, with midfielder Luis Gonzalez and striker César Delgado wide open on the right flank, Saviola breaking down the middle and Number 10 D¿Alessandro and Kily Gonzales arriving from behind for support. This way, the team scored the opener on 4 minutes, with Kily converting a spot-kick earned by Delgado. This goal spurred Argentina into action and within 15 minutes, Javier Saviola's star shone brightly, with the player scoring a hat-trick. The match became a stroll in the park and there was time still for D¿Alessandro and Luis Gonzales to add their names to the scoresheet and seal a 6-1 victory.

With a man down, Uruguay managed to earn a 2-all draw at the death with Mexico. Uruguay opened the scoring with Carlos Bueno, but soon after Mexico leveled the scores through Ricardo Osorio. After the break, Mexico reversed the scoreline with a piledriver by Pavel Pardo. Uruguayan coach Jorge Fossati swapped a shy Dario Silva for Ramon Morales, who was sent off in one of his first moves. Despite the man disadvantage, Uruguay managed to restore parity on 87 minutes after a header by defender Paolo Montero. Now, Uruguay will lock horns with Ecuador on Saturday 10th, while Mexico will meet Argentina on the same date.

In the first half, both teams played with caution since it was their debut in the Copa América. Both sides created few opportunities and heavy marking defined the first half. Uruguay broke the deadlock on 42 minutes, when the Mexican defense was caught off-guard for the first time, allowing Diego Forlan to nod the ball to Carlos Bueno, who fired Uruguay into the lead 1-nil. When the referee was about to end the first half, Osorio tried to supply a cross and lobbed keeper Luis Barbat to draw level for Mexico.

The second half started with the same script, with both sides missing a lot of passes. With heavy traffic in midfield, the solution was to attempt shots from long range. On one of these attempts, Mexico reversed the scoring with a blistering strike by Pavel Pardo from outside the box. This goal kicked Uruguay into action and coach Jorge Fossati pressed his team forward. On 80 minutes, Carlos Bueno almost brought the teams level. But on 82 minutes, Ramon Morales, who had just come on, was given his marching orders for a crude challenge. Mexico tried to capitalize on the extra man and moved forward, but after a corner-kick from the right side, defender Paolo Montero rose higher than the Mexican defenders and secured a 2-all tie.

For Argentina, there¿s more than just 3 points at stake on their debut in Copa América 2004, there¿s an 80-year tradition they must defend. The record title winner in the competition alongside Uruguay, both with 14 cup glories, the Argentineans haven¿t won the longest running football tournament in the world since 1993, in Ecuador. To end this 11-year drought, coach Marcelo Bielsa called up all his first choice players. The team that will take to the pitch this Wednesday, at 7:45 pm local time, (9:45 pm, Brasilia time), to face Ecuador at the Elias Aguirre stadium in Chiclayo is basically the same that represented the country in the recent 2006 World Cup Qualifiers. Bielsa¿s future at the helm of the national squad is also at stake. He has placed his bets on a side that is second in the Qualifiers, on 12 points, behind Brazil, but has performed poorly in the two previous fixtures (losing 3-1 to Brazil and being held to goal-less draw by Paraguay).

In fact, the coach has been severely criticized since the poor campaign at the 2002 World Cup finals, when the Argentineans were ousted in the first phase.
But the manager will make a few tests. During the Wednesday match, Bielsa might give up the 3-4-3 formation frequently used by Argentina, but will keep an attack-minded outfit, using the traditional 4-3-3, with two men on the flanks. Besides, he dismissed Crespo from Copa América duty and called up Saviola, the Barcelona frontman. Tevez, from Boca Juniors, will be on the bench. No, we never leave the pitch defeated. I repeat that the referee harmed us with this non-existent penalty. We didn¿t make the most of the opportunities we created.

Peru began their campaign in the Copa América giving the local fans a scare after putting on a huge feast during the opening ceremony just before the match. After going 2 goals down against a surprising Bolivian team, Paulo Autuori´s men mounted a comeback and managed to earn a less frustrating result for the enthused supporters.

In the first half, after setting the pace, Peru suffered a terrible blow, when Joaquín Botero showcased his poacher´s instincts as Bolivia broke on the counter. With a 1-nil lead, the Bolivians, the basement boys in the South American Qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup, sat deep. Peru, who kicked off with three strikers (Maestri the late substitute for Palacios) created a few opportunities, but were unable to beat goalkeeper Leo Fernandez.

After the break, the match maintained the same pace, but after a dreadful defensive blunder, especially by keeper Oscar Ibañez, Bolivia added a second. Left-back Lorgio Alvarez rounding Ibañez before tucking the ball away. Trailing by two, Paulo Autuori decided to make changes and put Palacios and Mendonza on the pitch. The replacements paid off as Peru created clear chances. On 67 minutes, Vilches earned a spot-kick and Pizarro halved the deficit. Spurred on by the home fans, the hosts carried on pressing forward and were rewarded with the equalizer on 86 minutes. Midfielder Palacios scoring a blockbuster with an individual effort to gain a share of the spoils on 2-all.
